Martin Avery Competition Article written by Barbara Green
SLPS WINNER!
On Monday 17th November a group of SLPS members travelled to South Manchester for the 2014 Martin Avery Competition, to see our entry compete against those from Chorley, North Cheshire, St Helens, South Manchester and Southport. Before the meeting started, we were allowed a preview of the prints which revealed a very high standard indeed, rather daunting.
Bob Dennis was the judge and throughout the evening he showed admirable fairness and consistency in his critiques, as well as letting slip his fondness for horses, useful to know for future reference perhaps. After the interval, the tension began to mount, especially when Bob came to allocate marks to the eight prints short listed as possible winners. At last there were only two prints left on the stand, one by Adrian Lines and the other by our own Irene Drummond! The suspense was palpable as Bob took his time deciding but eventually chose Irene as the winner – deservedly so, as her print of the bridge in Venice is a beautiful image, timeless in its appeal and praised very highly indeed by Bob for its superb composition, creativity and artistic merit.
SLPS came fourth overall out of the six clubs but nevertheless, there was a definite air of celebration as we accompanied our jubilant winner back to Liverpool. Well done, Irene!
