As an ongoing part of our 2019 SLPS Summer Season… The Society, welcomed a ‘Club’ photographer from Yorkshire (Bishopthorpe CC)… David Kessel.
David began his Presentation, by explaining the personal issues of his life, which rekindled his love of photography, and the subsequent purchasing of a bike, which helped him get on top, and over his own health issues, during a darker period of his life… so much so… that he now joins Derek G, a long-time friend... and one of our own SLPS Committee members, as they travel with their bikes around the UK and further afield, recently joining Derek and others, on an ‘organised’ trip to the Continent, taking some wonderful imagery along the way… which we all enjoy when Derek shows his own work to the Society…
David gave us a broad spectrum of photography genres, which he enjoys, and which motivate and drive him on the experimentation pathway, in order to hone these chosen genre’s, from such things as ‘street’ ‘under-water’ ‘travel’ and ‘music’ to name but four…
David started his image presentation with some super under-water shots, which included diving with sharks, (including Tiger Sharks), under instruction from a ‘dive’ coordinator, but without the use of cages, or protective chain mail… absolutely fascinating !!!
David then progressed to his ‘street’ photography section… and although we have all done a bit of this genre over the years… David takes it to a whole new and different level… as his work, mainly involves the homeless, and rough sleepers, of York and District, with whom he has built up a relationship over some years… and where as we may take the odd shot from time to time, to Davids credit, he ‘involves’ himself in their lives on the street, and they know him by name and have mutual respect… these are a ‘forgotten’ and ignored people in our Society, and personally I believe, David is performing a social record as well as providing us with some stunning images of a life we seldom see…
After our half-time cuppa, we settled in to see David’s third imagery selection, that of an organised bike road trip through Italy, from the south right up the ‘boot’ culminating in a visit to Chiogga… and onto Venice… with some great images along the way… David’s last offering to the Society, and to round off a super nights showing… was his ‘music’ portion, where he enjoys taking local and national musicians… and you can see more of David’s work, here on his FlickR account….
A memorable and interesting showing, especially for myself… witnessing his recording of a less fortunate class of street society…
