Article and photos by Mal Holmes

Thursday 28/06/19

The long anticipated ‘Bebington Battle’ took place this evening… this eagerly awaited annual inter-society ‘battle’ between two of the Leading Photographic Societies in the area, situated on either side of the River Mersey… set off for a highly contested competition… and the PRIZE ??? Bragging rights for the year !!!

Tonight’s Independent Judge… was none other than Janice Barton, an award winning photographer & judge, hailing from another fantastically talented local Photographic Society on the banks of the Mersey/Manchester Ship Canal, that of Warrington Photographic Society.

The evening got underway, at a little past 20:00.and the first session where the PDIs, projected on the Society’s large screen. The standard… exactly what I had expected… some absolutely stunning images, in this ‘open’ category showing… after much deliberation from Janice, with the help of Paul M (Vice President) at the computer, and Martin R & Bob D… keeping track totting up the scores… A worthy winner of the DPI section was found… This being Martin Reece’s superb image of ‘The Oculus Transport Hub, NYC’ (see image).  I can say without doubt a worthy winner… and don’t take my word for it… I can divulge that the RPS, have recently chosen this image of Martin’s, for the cover of their RPS Travel Magazine…. IMPRESSIVE !!!

When the points were added up… and the tally’s agreed on… the battle was an equal draw for the PDIs.   After a half-time cuppa and natter… I got the chance for a quick snap of the opposing cohort, and Judge… for our own records of the  event.

Our visitors from Bebington Photographic Society.. who joined us for this evenings, hottley contested 'battle'.... AND who's that hiding at the back.... ? Only our Judge for the evening.... Janice Barton !!!

The second half got under way with both teams equal… and if we thought the PDIs were exceptional, the printed images were quality themselves,  of course they were also displayed digitally for those attending to marvel at the subject matter. It  has to be said our Judge (Janice) definitely had a job on her hands to pick just one image for the 20 points on offer…

An amusing interlude was that of Janice telling us… when the image of a bearded gent came up…. Janice pulled one of our ‘helpers’ taking the images (Bert) and gave us all a live model demo… of the best ways to process a beard in the editing suites, much to Bert and the Society’s delight…
